Fargo, ND (WDAY TV)-- Let's hope this is the last weekend we have to say this 'Brace yourself for significant snow during the next 48-hours.'
As the Red begins to send some of our slow winter melt, North, there is obvious anticipation, apprehension about the impact of what will fall and where this weekend.
Mike Lukes- Hydrologist- National Weather Service: “It depends on a lot of factors, we still have to melt that snow, we know how much water is in the snow, now we want to know how fast it melts and how fast it gets to the channels and any additional rain.”
And while the flood forecasters have figured in events like this, snow and rain, Hydrologists will be watching how much and where that rain and snow falls. The impact on our snow pack to the south, which, when melted, comes our way.
Lukes: What happens there, rain will influence what will come to fargo moorhead. Three quarters to an inch of water on the ice pack we have.
And what will change for Fargo after this weekend's storm.
April Walker- Fargo City Engineer: “We are always concerned we are always watching the weather and the bottom line is what the weather service has told us is the potential is out there in the snow pack and we have prepared our plans to fight the significant event based on the potential that already exists.”
Heavy rainfall on top of the snowpack to the south is what concerns flood fighters. As much as we mentally want a quick warm up, a slow melt after this weekend is still needed.
