Four are cited for mudding near Mapleton

Mapleton, ND (WDAY TV) -- As we slowly crawl into warmer weather, the ground is softening. Some are taking advantage of the melt by mudding. To fix those ruts, can cost thousands, and more importantly could be deadly.

Mapleton, ND (WDAY TV) -- As we slowly crawl into warmer weather, the ground is softening. Some are taking advantage of the melt by mudding. To fix those ruts, can cost thousands, and more importantly could be deadly.

Peter Fendt/Valley Water Rescue: "We are starting to see the ditches are filling up with water."

Take a short ride, and you can see for yourself. As the snow is melting away the water is creeping closer.

Fendt/Valley Water Rescue: "There's some real deep ditches that will actually cover your car completely if you end up driving in."

But that's not stopping drivers from having a good time. This weekend four people were cited in Mapleton for tearing up the mud.

Jade Van Den Einde/Cass Co. Sheriff Deputy: "It seems every spring we deal with this for a couple weeks."

One man was arrested, his license had been suspended. If the four drivers are found guilty they could pay up to a one thousand dollar fine, each.

Whether it's mud running or simply trying to get where you're going, either way, it could cost you, your life.

Van Den Einde/Cass Co. Sheriff Deputy: "They could go off the road and end up rolling down into the ditch and land upside and not be able to get out of their vehicle and drown."

Just two years ago, flood season didn't stop these guys from mudding. What did, was getting stuck. And forcing a Water Rescue team to save them.

Fendt/Valley Water Rescue:"and that's the reason they're running them is because they're slippery and wet and soft. But you go off to the side of them and you're either going to have a long walk back or you're going to have a hard time getting out."

The Cass County Sheriff's office is looking into stiffer punishments for those who break this law.
