Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) -- Pope Francis has appointed a new Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Fargo.

Monsignor John Thomas Folda will take over the position from former Bishop Aquila. The announcement was made in Rome at 5 this morning Fargo time.

51-year-old Folda was born in Omaha, Nebraska, and served as a priest of the Diocese of Lincoln, Nebraska. He says he's impressed by the strong "stand for life" North Dakota lawmakers took in passing anti-abortion Legislation.

Folda says, "my plan is to be encouraging as I can be to educate as much as I can, not only the Catholics of the Diocese, but all of the people of the Diocese of this area about the important about the defense of life."

The Fargo Diocese serves more than 72-thousand Catholics and 132 parishes and missions in the eastern half of North Dakota.
