Grand Forks, ND (WDAY TV) -- The snow is off Memorial Stadium field, and UND football has gotten spring practice underway.

North Dakota learned a lot about the challenges of the Big Sky, going 5-6 in their first season. A solid group of players return including, six starters on both sides of the ball.

But, their will be a lot of things to get used to this next month.

There have been major shakeups on the coaching staff, and the team is relying on first-year players to make an impact, including quarterback

where 3 red-shirt freshman are battling for the starting spot. Head Coach Chris Mussman knows every day will be crucial.

Mussman says, "The kids need to trust that the coaches are doing what they can to put them in the right position and we need to be able to trust them that they're going to do what we ask them to do and that's a process. This is that brick-by-brick mentality that this is the first step in the process."

UND has announced that freshman fullback Kevin Bayer has left the team.

Meanwhile, a couple quick notes from NDSU spring practice, Red-shirt freshman defensive tackle Austin Farnlof is out with an injury, they're fearing that it's a torn ACL. And wide receiver Trevor Gebhart left

practice early with a foot injury, but should be okay.
