Meat industry is re-naming some pork and beef favorites

Fargo, ND (WDAY TV)-- Is nothing "sacred?" The meat industry has now announced it is re-naming some of our pork and beef favorites. Boneless Shoulder Top Blade Steak will be "Flat-Iron." Boston Roast replaces Pork Butt.

Fargo, ND (WDAY TV)-- Is nothing "sacred?" The meat industry has now announced it is re-naming some of our pork and beef favorites. Boneless Shoulder Top Blade Steak will be "Flat-Iron." Boston Roast replaces Pork Butt.

One all-time beloved grilling sensation, the pork chop, will lose its identity too.

These little piggies are enjoying their final days of freedom. At 250 pounds the Yorkshire-Duroc Cross hogs are market bound. Donating some of their tasty pork chops to the grillers who can't get enough of them.

Ron Zimprich- NDSU Swine Program: “It is a good lean cut, and in fact they will tell you--you get a good lean pork chop it is a lot like chicken, we talk about chicken being so lean and healthy.

But the Pork Chop is getting an upgrade. As part of a new marketing campaign, the meat industry is renaming 350-meat cuts.

It is more of a beloved cut out of the hog.

Our beloved pork chop is becoming a bit haughty. To be known now as porterhouse or rib-eye chops. Tim Skauge owns south Fargo's Prime Cut Meats.

Tim Skauge- Prime Cut Meats: “Pork Chops have been around since the ice ago, so to rename it a T-bone or porterhouse pork chop, I think the industry will upgrade it and get more money for it.”

The industry says the new names reflect the cultural changes in how meat is cooked. In fact one reason for the name change is this.

The grill. With the season soon upon us, sales of the familiar meats with the new names are expected to boom.

But the meat industry is smart enough to not meddle with everything. The Holy Grail, bacon will still be bacon.

The only industry to make no changes?? Chicken is still chicken.
