FARGO, N.D. (AP) — The Fargo Forestry Department says it will begin inspecting firewood at homes around the city next week in an effort to manage the spread of Dutch elm disease.

Dutch elm disease destroyed more than 300 elm trees in Fargo last year.

The city says storing or transporting elm wood with bark attached is prohibited by city ordinance, and residents wanting to use elm as firewood must completely remove the bark.

Residents wanting to dispose of logs containing bark can place them on the boulevard for pickup by April 12 and notify the department.
