Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - Passionate, enthusiastic and fun. Those are the words students are using to describe a MSUM professor cut from the faculty.
Now, they're reaching out to the public to save what they call, their beloved teacher.
James Carlson, MSUM Junior: "You say ‘Shannon Terry’ on campus, everybody goes, the sociology teacher?"
Everyone knows her. And after announcing her position had been sliced from the sociology department
Carlson: "Right there I was like, just shocked."
Students say no one here will forget her either. But some students are fighting for her to stay.
Heith Olek, MSUM Freshman: "She asked everyone's names the first day, and the second day of class she knew everyone’s names."
Heith Olek took to the internet to protest the cut backs. He created this Facebook page, an online petition. So far, 232 likes and counting. MSUM says this was a simple business decision.
David Wahlberg, MSUM Marketing: "It's not a reflection on her quality as a teacher. It's on the realities of how many sections of classes we'll be offering next fall and how much money do we have to offer those sections."
Olek: "Budget cuts are one thing. To me, it's not something you should be cutting is education, especially when it's a teacher who's universally loved by everyone.”
Shannon Terry is a term-appointed professor meaning she's not guaranteed a job longer than her contract. That contract ends this spring, and so does her job at MSUM.
Carlson: "They are losing a great teacher, but also a great person.”
Terry's not sure where her next move will take her.
