Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - The effort and materials it'll take to make a million sandbags are staggering.

Sandbag Central opened at 8 this morning and quickly started pumping out sandbags.

The first day of the flood fight has been a success. They say they are on track to meet their 100,000 bag goal for the day.

The amount of sand and number of volunteers it takes to do that is pretty impressive.

Bruce Grubb, Sandbag Central Coordinator: “The road to one million sandbags has begun.”

Fargo and Cass county officials hope to do it in ten days. If they can keep sandbag central fully staffed with volunteers - that shouldn't be a problem.

Grubb: "What we've asked for is 300 volunteers every hour throughout the sandbag day, if that's possible."

Three sand spiders with 12 arms each can pump out a total of 18,000 sandbags per hour.

Volunteers pack 100 sandbags onto each of one these wooden pallets. That means it will take 10,000 of these palettes to carry all those sandbags where they need to go.

And this effort takes tons of sand; 7,500 tons, to be exact. The sale of all that sand is contracted out.

Pumping out 100,000 sandbags every day will be no easy feat, but judging by the community's past efforts, it will get done somehow. And then, it's on to the next task.

Grubb: "This is sandbag production. The next phase of all of this will be delivering them where they're needed to be built into sandbag levees."

Twelve flatbed semi-trucks stand ready to bring the bags to neighborhoods that need them.
