Hawley, MN (WDAY TV) -- Tonight we get a closer look at a plane that crashed near Hawley, killing the pilot.
When the plane went down, conditions were foggy. Today, the exact cause of the crash remains under investigation.
Federal investigators were out here today, trying to get a clear picture of how and why this plane went down in a field near Hawley. In addition to FAA, investigators from the manufacturing company are scoping out the crash. After spending several hours at the scene of the crash, they began to load the plane, piece by piece, onto a trailer.
Bergquist: "Federal investigators want to know, we want to know, and I'm sure the family wants to know what happened."
48-year-old Kevin Ferris was heading to Moorhead from Duluth, to visit family for the Easter weekend. The family last heard from him as he flew over Park Rapids Friday afternoon. That evening, authorities found the wreckage southeast of Hawley.
Bergquist: "We do know there was heavy fog, and it was in and out, it would be clear and then dense."
It's a sad reminder as they pick up the pieces to the plane, most families will be getting together this holiday weekend, while one mourns as a piece of their family is missing.
Sheriff Bergquist says it will likely be several days before a report comes out.
