Fargo, ND (WDAY TV)-- Five days until Sandbag Central opens,
and you're hoping to volunteer, listen up.
The Volunteer Hotline will begin scheduling volunteers at 8 a.m. this Monday.
City crews are getting sandbag central ready for all those volunteers when the doors open Wednesday.
It's been two years since we've needed sandbag central.
But with three years in a row of practice before that, remembering how it all goes together comes back pretty quickly.
The call is out.
Volunteers can begin signing up to fill sandbags first thing Monday morning.
But before they can get to work, sandbag central needs to be ready.
Mike Belinskey, an Equipment operator says, "We've been doing it the last four out of five years, so we're getting it down pretty good now."
Fargo and Cass County need to make one million sandbags to protect neighborhoods from anticipated spring floodwaters.
The city's solid waste division is setting up the sand spiders, conveyors, and other equipment needed for that effort.
Terry Ludlum, a Solid Waste Utility Manager says, "What we're having to do is go short-staffed because we still have to run the landfill, we still have to pick garbage, we still have to do all of our recycling."
The sand won't actually arrive until Monday.
Crews will then do a test run to make sure the machinery is up to the task.
Belinskey says, "It's a lot easier now, we've made a lot of improvements to make everybody's life easier. Where everything's located, and the spiders, obviously we can crank out sandbags like nobody's business."
To reach the volunteer hotline, call this number on the screen.
Again, they will begin answering calls at 8 a.m. on Monday.
Sandbag Central opens April 3rd.
