Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - There is a good chance students across the country can thank 6th graders from Lisbon for changes in the school lunch program.

During an appearance at Davies High School, Senator John Hoeven introduced some of the Lisbon students who wrote him to sound off on strict new school lunch requirements that left many students hungry.

The USDA rules were meant to curb obesity by limiting calories. The changes sent a shock wave through homes and schools around the country.

Sen. John Hoeven, (R) North Dakota: “So we got the department of Ag to make the change this year but we need a permanent change in the law so these schools provide meals that are healthy and nutritious that the kids feel satisfied with.”

Hoeven says he heard from school superintendents, parents and many students about the meal plan.
