Prescribed burns planned on Dakotas grasslands

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The U.S. Forest Service is planning prescribed burns on the Grand River and Sheyenne National Grasslands in the Dakotas.

The Dakota Prairie Grasslands office says the work will be done as weather permits in the next month and a half. About 900 acres will be burned on the Grand River Ranger District in northwestern South Dakota and about 5,000 acres will be burned on the Sheyenne Ranger District in southeastern North Dakota.

Grasslands officials say prescribed burns help keep native grasses and prairie habitat healthy while discouraging the growth of invasive species.
