Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - The news just keeps getting worse for some of the tenants evacuated from a Moorhead apartment complex Saturday night when a water pipe burst. Not only will some of the tenants be displaced for weeks, many, if not all of their personal belongings are a total loss.
As the Johnson brothers walk into their apartment complex, they reminisce how life suddenly changed.
Jacob Johnson - Displaced Tenant: "I thought it was an earthquake, then I changed my mind and thought it was hail. Then I thought the building was falling down.”
A relaxing evening would end in chaos, complete devastation.
Joseph Johnson – Displaced Tenant: "I was laying down watching a basketball game and then the whole building started shaking. Then the next thing you knew, water seeping through the walls."
Jacob Johnson: “It just came from everywhere."
Jacob and Joseph say they were in shock as gravel and ice cold water began to fill the apartment. The only thing on their minds were loved ones.
Joseph Johnson: "I was just making sure my family was safe, everyone was okay and everyone had what they needed."
Joseph says water levels rose within minutes, building up so much pressure the family's toilet ended up in pieces. As if water damage wasn't enough, many tenants came back to find thick sludge covering every inch of their floor. In some of the places the sludge is 12 inches deep.
Joseph Johnson: "The mud came up to right here when I was running thru it."
After making sure their mother and grandmother were safe, the boys came back for a few minor possessions.
Jacob Johnson: "I got some stuff out of my room like my laptop and my phone, and then helped my brother get some clothes. My clothes are gone."
The brothers say worst of all, pictures, awards, furniture, appliances and so much more. The family had until noon to salvage any belongings.
The Johnson's did have renter's insurance. For the second day in a row we tried contacting the property manager. Our calls were not returned.
