Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) -- Two heavyweights in FCS Football that figured to challenge NDSU for a third straight national championship are moving up to the big boys.

Appalachian State and Georgia Southern both plan to announce on Wednesday

they are leaving FCS and moving to the Sun Belt Conference and 1-A football

because of that transition; NCAA rules dictate they are both ineligible

for this year's FCS Playoffs.

Georgia Southern has become a rival of NDSU, with the Bison knocking off

the Eagles in the FCS Semis the last 2 years and leaves a gaping hole

for 1-Double A.

Gene Taylor, NDSU Athletic Director, says, "Lose two powerful programs

that could have easily won national championships that's a blow to FCS Football. Does it weaken the field adding 24, take 2 good teams out, anyone match those teams right away who knows, but yeah we're going to miss them clearly."
