Minnesota (WDAY TV) -- The way this season started for the Gophers; expectations were sky high that at least the Sweet 16 was attainable after beginning 15-1, instead, Minnesota stumbled to a 6-12 finish and today Tubby Smith paid the price as he was fired as head coach after yesterday's season ending loss to Florida.

Smith racked up a 124-81 record during his 6 years in Minneapolis; but

was 16 games under 500 in the Big ten during his term.

Norwood Teague, Minnesota Athletic Director, says, "As I said it's an evaluation of the overall body of work i evaluate throughout the year, came

down to the end thought it was time to move on you always have a short

list people in mind some realistic some unrealistic but i have a list in mind, we'll work that and get a terrific coach."

Two leading candidates both have VCU ties; Shaka Smart and Anthony Grant; that's where Teague came from.
