Moorhead, MN (WDAY TV) -- A water main break forces an entire Moorhead apartment building to be evacuated, displacing all of its residents on one of the worst weekends possible.

Every hotel was booked. It put the Red Cross scrambling in the middle of the night to find shelter for the families. Volunteers ended up creating a make-shift shelter at MSUM.

Late last night people on the main floor of Eastwood Manor had 3 feet of water pour in on them. The flooding caused the boiler to go out, and that's what caused the entire place to be evacuated -- they had no heat.

Sean Coffman with the American Red Cross says, "Many of them were getting ready for bed, and the next thing they knew, there was water everywhere in their apartment. There was a lot of fear, a lot of them weren't sure what the next step was going to be."

Hotels were booked because of the state girls basketball tournament,

and a youth hockey tournament. Displaced families did get into a hotel for tonight.
