(WDAY TV) -- We are starting to see the effects of the sequester, those massive government budget cuts.

This afternoon, the FAA announced it will close 149 air traffic control towers at small airports around the country because of the cuts. Here in Fargo, more than 225 members of the Air National Guard will be affected if a furlough passes.

More than 600 federal technicians would be impacted across North Dakota. More than a third are Air National Guard, who are primarily in Fargo, and the remainder are Army National Guard.

The furlough would give the Department of Defense 2 point 6 million dollars to use in it's budget.

John Dougherty, the 119th Operations Group Commander, says, "it comes back to the missions we perform here, it impacts things like readiness, it impacts you know things like am I ready for an inspection. I'm at Twenty percent of the people power i would have to be prepared."

Officials say the furlough will not affect flood fighting efforts.
