Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - It's been the goal for the NDSU wrestling team since the move up to Division 1 - to get an All-American. They believe this is their best shot in 7 years.
The NCAA wrestling championships begin on Thursday in Des Moines; the Bison will send 4, including two of their more prolific wrestlers in Trent Sprenkle and Stephen Monk; each looking to improve from a trip to nationals last year.
Trent Sprenkle – NDSU Senior, 125 lbs: “Right now it's like who's going to be the first; I think down the road we're going to have one every year; our program is getting to the point where we're have a lot of All-Americans All American would be awesome, national champ would be better setting our sights high.”
Stephen Monk – #5 Seed at 165 lbs: “Same mindset that you take into every match; just know you're going to win; confident in your training; and just believing in yourself just like any other match you're going into.”
Those two are joined by Mac Stoll and Evan Knutson. NDSU had a D-1 All-American in 1988, when the program was still Division 2.
