MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — A fast-spreading brush fire to destroyed 26 buildings at an apartment complex, displacing hundreds of residents.

Officials determined that the fire started in a wooded area at some power lines near the Waterford Plantation complex, but they had not determined what started the fire, said Scott Hawkins, a spokesman for the South Carolina Forestry Commission.

“While we can’t rule out a debris burn, we’re not thinking it was a debris burn because if it was a debris burn, the cause it would be fairly obvious,” Hawkins said. “We know where it started, we just don’t know what started.”

Search and rescue crews with cadaver dogs were combing through the building remains Sunday. It was unclear how many people were unaccounted for from the apartments.
