(WDAY TV) -- Stiffened gun regulations are headed to the Minnesota Senate floor after passing a Judiciary Committee.

The proposal passed 5 to 3 and includes checks for all firearms purchases. The democratic bill author says expanding background checks is widely supported throughout the state.

A spokesperson for the NRA argued expanded checks would essentially ban private sales and trades and would not have prevented any of the tragedies that spurred this legislation.

Meantime, The House plans to discuss an overall gun control proposal next week.
