(WDAY TV) -- Cass and Clay Counties are trying to make sure healthy, locally grown food is available to everyone.

The Metropolitan Council of Governments is now developing a food systems plan, to better connect local growers with consumers. Communities nationwide are joining the trend of strengthening local food systems.

They say it could increase access to safe, nutritious, affordable food.

Wade Kline, Metro CoG Exec. Dir., says, "Are there areas in our community, what might be called a food desert, where it's difficult to get good, healthy food. Maybe your closest option is a convenience store. Convenience stores are great for a lot of things, but they're not necessarily great for getting dinner."

A public input meeting is scheduled for 5:30, March 19th at the Fargo Public Library.
