Flaw with TurboTax could cost Minnesota residents

Moorhead, MN (WDAY TV) -- Minnesota revenue officials came out with an alarming statement today, saying if you used tax giant TurboTax to file your state taxes, they could be inaccurate.

TurboTax is under fire today as those officials say they found multiple problems with the filing system. The big question, that even the experts are asking tonight, is this a big or small problem?

And we might not know that for a couple of days.

What we do know is Minnesota Revenue officials found, what they say are multiple problems with Intuit tax software. The company is responsible for TurboTax and a hand full of other tax calculating systems.

Intuit's people are saying that this is an isolated, minor glitch. They say it has to do with whether tax payers donated 5-dollars to a political party, and that it does not affect anyone's refund amounts or the taxes they owe.

What you need to keep in mind, professionals use Intuit software so even if you had help filing this could still affect you. However you filed with intuit software, it is likely this will delay your refund.

Leslie Scilley with Tax Service Plus says, "if you were filing taxes online by yourself you're obviously going to be suffering frustration because you're looking for your refund you can't find answers where a professional would maybe know those things and save you some trouble that way."

The department of revenue had been reporting a glitch with the software for about a month now, but not until today came out with the strong language, urging people not to use the software. Experts say if you haven't filed and you're set on using TurboTax wait for these bugs to be worked out and then file.
