Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - We now know it cost the ELCA'S "Northwestern Minnesota Synod" $13,000 for a forensic audit that led to the arrest of its bookkeeper.
61-year old Robert Larson is charged with felony theft and check forgery after he allegedly embezzled nearly three quarters of a million dollars.
He spent more than half the money on remodeling his house outside of Wolverton. While insurance has replaced some of the fund, the synod is now working to replenish the money.
The synod has also replaced the firm doing its audits, Eide Bailey.
Rev. Larry Wohlrabe, NW Minnesota Synod-Bishop: “We have already returned $350,000 to our hunger program which is the money Mr. Larson took to embezzle we paid for the forensic audit out of that and now looking at where else he misappropriated other funds.”
The Synod staff will now handle its bookkeeping with a professional accounting firm in Moorhead.
