Glyndon, MN (WDAY TV) - We are only weeks away from sunshine, warmer temps and t-shirt weather - hopefully. But bikers, you don't have to wait any longer to bust out your motorcycles. Now, you can ride in the snow.
Bring out the bikes and punch the throttle, but leave your coat on.
Matt Halseth – Snowbike Rider: "You notice the tires are missing."
Matt has the need for speed, and winter isn't stopping him. Just a quick fix - two hours in the shop - and what used to be a dirt bike is now ready for the snow.
Matt Halseth: "It's unbelievable. It handles kind of like a bike, but like a sled. You can corner and angle really tight."
The idea really revved up out of Idaho. It's meant for the mountains. Matt thinks, here in the Midwest, the cross between motorcycle and snowmobile will really take off.
Matt Halseth: "Cycle affect; it will start rolling and we'll see more."
It can be converted from pretty much any bike and can still hit about 50 miles an hour.
Tristan Ehlenfeldt – Service Advisor: "It's one of those things. It's neat, it's new, and people look at it. It's a little bit weird."
Matt Halseth: "Driving down highway ten, you get those looks."
The bike or mobile - whatever you want to call it - costs about $5,000 to strip down, suit up and ride out in this winter weather.
Tristan Ehlenfeldt: "For the cost of snowmobiles these days it's actually not too bad."
Not to mention, it makes up for lost time.
Matt Halseth: "These guys don't use their bikes in the winter. We need to come up with something they utilize as the machine all year round."
So, no matter the temp, a bike like this will be ready until it's time to ditch that coat for a t-shirt.
If you want to check out this trail-approved bike, it will be on display this Thursday at The Hub, and at the Buffalo Race Park over the weekend.
