FARGO – Police here are investigating an alleged assault – and possible sexual assault – of a 16-year-old female student at Davies High School by an 18-year-old male student, Lt. Joel Vettel said.
Officers were called to the school at 4:15 p.m. Monday about the alleged assault, which happened 10 minutes earlier.
The suspect was gone by the time officers arrived, and he was not in custody as of 11:30 a.m. today, Vettel said, adding the case remains under investigation.
The two students involved had a relationship, Vettel said. He said a verbal altercation broke out between the two students in an entryway and turned physical, and at some point the male student threw the girl to the ground.
In the ensuing struggle, the girl sustained abrasions to her face and hands and bruising to her back, Vettel said. Her shirt also was ripped open, and the suspect allegedly grabbed her breasts, he said.
Another student who witnessed the assault tried to intervene, he said.
The Police Department’s school resource officer had left Davies before the assault took place, but officers responded to the school within a few minutes of the call, Vettel said.
The girl was treated for her injuries and released to her parents, he said.
School officials are working closely with police in the investigation, he said.
“They’re been extremely helpful, obviously, in dealing with this,” he said.
