Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) -- Fargo Police is taking a new approach to curb texting and driving.

The Department held a kick-off event for the "Eyes Forward" campaign at West Acres Mall today. People are signing pledges, promising to stop texting and driving.

Crime prevention officers say distracted driving is proving time and time again to be more dangerous that people realize.

Officer Jessica Schindeldecker, crime prevention officer, says, "Using any sort of device will change your ability to concentrate almost to the point of being at a .08 alcohol level. So, it's just as dangerous as driving while intoxicated."

Studies show sending a text takes a person's eyes off the road for an average of 5 seconds.
