DICKINSON, N.D. - A two-vehicle, head-on collision involving an empty Dickinson Public Schools bus killed the driver of a pickup truck Thursday on Highway 22, three miles north of Dickinson.
According to the North Dakota Highway Patrol, a 2004 Dodge Ram was traveling south on Highway 22 at 6:37 a.m. when it crossed the center line for unknown reasons and struck a 2004 International bus that was registered to Dickinson Public Schools.
The 53-year-old driver of the Ram was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver’s name was being withheld.
The truck’s passenger, Christopher Preston, 23, of Craig, Colo., and the bus driver, Ronald Hendricks, 62, of Dickinson, were transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Dickinson for treatment.
Schools Superintendent Doug Sullivan said parents were informed that the bus would not be able to complete its route Thursday.
The Stark County Sheriff’s Office, Dickinson Police Department, Dickinson Fire and Rescue and Dickinson Ambulance responded to the scene.
Traffic on Highway 22 was shut down near the accident scene. The two southbound lanes reopened before 8:30 a.m. Thursday, but both northbound lanes remained closed at that time.
