Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - It something many of us don't get enough of: Sleep. We stretch our days by stealing from our nights.

If you want to make the most of the sleep you do get, there's an app for that.

Headaches, obesity, heart disease, depression: all side effects of not getting enough sleep and even one night of sleep loss can cause problems.

If you can't get more sleep, the Sleep Cycle Alarm Clock App could help you learn how to get "better" sleep and it's easy to get started.

After you download the app, you put your phone face down on the corner of your bed near your pillow. You can set the alarm and program it to play soothing sounds or white noise or even your own playlist to help you get to sleep.

Then once you do, the phone does all the work.

The app tracks your movements while you sleep. Then graphs how deeply you're sleeping. It may take a couple of days to calibrate but after a while you can see the hours you typically sleep most deeply and how much your sleep is affected by things like drinking coffee, eating or drinking too much or too much stress.

Based on the sleep graphs, the Sleep Cycle Alarm Clock then wakes you up within the 30 minutes before your alarm when you are in the lightest sleep at the optimal time so you're more refreshed to start the day.

So whether you can't fall asleep, can't stay asleep or wake up too early, it can help you get more quality sleep even if the quantity isn't there.

You'll likely want to keep the phone plugged in while you're running the app because Sleep Cycle says one night uses about 30 percent of your battery.
