Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) -- Students have raised a lot of money, and are now fighting for the chance to give it to the organization of their choice.

It's the first-ever " Book Challenge" for Oak Grove Lutheran and Saint Joseph's Catholic Schools. Students raised over 1 thousand dollars reading books and collecting pledges. Now, groups of students are persuading a panel of community members to put the money toward an organization of the group's choice.

Students say it's helping them see the power of philanthropy.

Preston Degerman, Oak Grove 8th Grader, says, "Once you are doing the project you start to realize you don't have it as bad as you think. You don't realize how bad it is for some people."

Students supported organizations like the Humane Society, Blood Water Mission, and Friends of the Orphans.
