Moorhead, MN (WDAY TV) -- There may be a new man behind the bench but the end result has been the same for the Moorhead Spuds hockey team, playing tonight for the 17th straight year in the section title game.
The opponent is Brainerd, who scored eight goals against the Spuds the last time they played, Jody Norstedt is in St. Cloud with a preview.
17 years ago, Moorhead head coach Pete Cullen was watching his cousin Matt
play at St Cloud State before going on to a great NHL career tonight Pete hopes to lead the Spuds to a third straight section championship in his 1st year as head coach.
Him and I shared some time in high school, bring back some good memories, that's what we're creating with these fellas tonight and hope we can continue.
You split with Brainerd what's it going to take to beat them tonight?
"We were undisciplined the last time we played Brainerd we took way too many penalties let them score 6 power play goals, not our game that we played difference tonight have a lot of speed and depth and use that to our advantage."
You played a tough schedule how does that factor tonight?
"As much as it stinks to lose to top teams not the greatest record, boys have learned to play in pressure games, they're ready for this."
The Spuds are certainly battled tested they've played 14 teams that are currently ranked in state; Brainerd has played zero.
Spuds going for a 3rd straight state trip and 4th in 5 years.
