Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - A group of NDSU students is working on an unusual project that in the end could help some parts of Kenya rise above poverty.

They're making reusable feminine pads that'll be taken to villages in Kenya.

Strange as it sounds, girls there don't have proper covering to use during their menstrual cycle.

It means they miss a week of school every month. It often puts girls behind so much they stop going to school.

And studies throughout history show when women in a community are educated, poverty disappears.

Laura Bihrle, Nursing Student Traveling to Kenya: "We were looking for something where we could make an impact and we think that by helping these girls receive an education they'll be able to get out of poverty."

The group will go to Kenya in April.
