Red River wins 16th State Title

Grand Forks, ND (WDAY TV) -- It's celebration Sunday in Grand Forks, the Red River boys hockey team capped off it's season with a 7-1 win over Grafton-Park River and a 16th state championship.

Grand Forks, ND (WDAY TV) -- It's celebration Sunday in Grand Forks, the Red River boys hockey team capped off it's season with a 7-1 win over Grafton-Park River and a 16th state championship.

The Roughriders outshot the Spoilers 42-14 in the game, They scored twice in the first, twice in the 2nd, and 3 times in the third. 5 different players got into the goal column for the Roughriders, who outscored their opponents 15-1 in the state tournament. Easy to see why, they're the champs.

Jacob Benson, Red River Jr. Forward, says, "They put up a good fight. You always expect that from them. We came out on top and it's the greatest feeling ever."

Jon Lizotte, ND Mr. Hockey winner, says, "At the beginning of the year this was our goal. That's what your goal should be at the beginning of the year to win a state championship. We worked those 4 months as hard as we could in practice, every game we tried to win and it feels great that we came out with a championship."

Bill Chase, Red River Head Coach, says, "We can't replace that. People like Branden Lunski, Jon Lizotte, Grant Campbell, Andy Norman, Brady Bernhardson, you don't get that stuff back."
