(WDAY TV) -- Daytona is the track where racing legends are made, and this afternoon Danica Patrick had a chance to cap off her terrific week with a place in the record books.

Patrick, obviously a fan favorite, starting on the pole for NASCAR's

season opening Daytona 500.

Her racing team owner Tony Stewart and many others got taken out on lap 33, when Kasey Kahne got turned sideways. Meanwhile, Danica became the first woman to lead a lap at Daytona, she led 5 of them during the middle of the race. She'd finish 8th, best ever for a woman. Jimmie Johnson who was knocked out after one lap last year, takes home the checkered, holding off Dale Earnhardt Junior, 54-year old Mark Martin took 3rd.
