Barnesville, MN (WDAY TV) -- Barnesville is doing something, up to now we've only seen in large cities, creating its own app.

Residents and visitors can find a calendar, newsfeed, city maps - even get to the bottom of local rumors.

New York. Chicago. Barnesville. That last one might have a smaller population, but the same big idea. It recently became the first in our area to launch a city app.

Karen Lauer/Economic Development Director: "Barnesville really takes pride in being a technology-advanced community."

The "It's About Barnesville" app includes an event calendar, newsfeed, and city maps. Going to a basketball tournament or another event in town? Residents and visitors can view the location, time, and how to get there.

Aaron Schindler/Barnesville Resident: "it's a great idea, I think it's a good way to get the name of Barnesville out there, if anybody is interested in our community."

Theresa Olson/Barnesville Resident: "I think it puts us in a different league of some of the smaller communities in the area."

One part of this app may require city officials to do a little detective work.

There are about 2500 people living in Barnesville and in a town that size, rumors can spread quickly. That's why the app has a feature called 'Rumor Watch.'

Karen: "People that live here can't ever get to the bottom of well, is it true, or isn't it true? So, with Rumor Watch they are able to report what they heard, and then we'll check it out."

Answers to those rumors will be posted on the City website. The app is available for free download on iPhone, iPad, and Android.
