FARGO – Ronald Rogers of Fargo, 46, is being held on $1 million bail in the Cass County Jail on charges he murdered his wife Tuesday night.

Police said the original call to the couple’s home at 3255 30th Ave. S. came in as a suicide by gunshot to the head of Elizabeth Rogers, 40. Police said the couple were the only two people at home at the time.

The preliminary investigation indicated that the pair were arguing and that Elizabeth Rogers fired the gun at her husband, who tried to take it away from her and failed. The initial report said she then turned the gun on herself.

Ronald Rogers was taken into custody about 5 a.m. Friday and booked into the Cass County Jail at 5:30 a.m. on murder charges.

Police Chief Keith Ternes said that “a result of some fairly exhaustive forensics,” including scene reconstruction and an autopsy, investigators found inconsistencies in the information Rogers gave them.

Cass County State’s Attorney Birch Burdick said the state asked for $1 million bail on Rogers in part because of the nature of the charges against him Burdick said the charges “ can mean up to a life sentence without parole, which can give that person an incentive to flee.”

He also said Rogers has not lived in the Fargo area long, and doesn’t appear to have any strong ties to the community.

Burdick would not comment on who made the original 911 call, identifying Elizabeth Rogers’ death as a suicide. He said the state doesn’t ordinarily comment on matters of evidence in pending cases.

Police said they found no evidence of pre-existing domestic violence or domestic abuse by Ronald Rogers. Burdick said Rogers is expected to make an appearance in Cass County District Court on formal charges of felony Class AA murder Monday morning.
