Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - This September, rape and abuse services could lose significant funding without a renewal of the Violence Against Women Act.

Senator Heidi Heitkamp addressed the issue at the YWCA as part of a North Dakota tour.

The Senate has now passed a version of the bill after the Act expired January 1st.

Heitkamp says provisions for Native Americans and the LGBTQ population are critical.

Sen. Heidi Heitkamp: "We need to reauthorize VAWA. We need to do the provisions that I think we need to do, that extend the protections to all of the people of our state and our country. But we also need to look up and say, ‘How can we do better?’”
