Dunn County sees spike in child abuse cases

KILLDEER, N.D. (AP) — The director of Dunn County's Social Services is calling an increase in child abuse cases a "disturbing trend."

Director Tom Picken tells The Dickinson Press that child abuse and neglect cases in the county increased to 47 during 2012. This is roughly double what the county had seen before.

Picken says the cases have also become more difficult and require more legal involvement.

For example, he says in one case a child was born addicted to methamphetamine and the state had to take custody of the child while the child's parents were arrested.

He says an interstate compact is used for placing children outside of North Dakota when necessary.
