(WDAY TV) -- Same-sex marriage is illegal in 40 states, including North Dakota, but one man is trying to change that.

Today, supporters stood outside of the Cass County Courthouse, demonstrating they are against the ban. Lenny Tweeden explained he's been married for 27 years, but even on Valentine's day, he's not allowed to marry his partner.

Not many showed up, but the group says, numbers do not matter.

Dan Sturgill, supporter, says, "Ya, there are three people out here and next year, if you are sitting there thinking yeah, this is something that I can support, it's going to be great to see more people here. So, this is a start, this is where it starts."

Only ten states allow gay marriage, including Illinois, which lifted their ban today.
