Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - Wrestling can be tracked back to the ancient Olympic Games. It's a sport that has been contested in every Olympics since 1896, but its future as an Olympic sport is certainly in doubt.
That's after the decision by the International Olympic Committee today to decide to drop wrestling from the 2020 Games. The IOC executive board decided to keep modern pentathlon over wrestling. The decision is not final; there's a chance for a last minute reprieve in September, but for the people we talked to, reaction ranged from shocked to anger.
Bucky Maughan – Former NDSU Head Coach: “It was a surprise to me, because it has never been brought up. Wrestling has been around forever. It's very popular around the whole world, and I was just shocked by it. So I talked to my friends at USA Wrestling and some of the things they told me were they were shocked, nobody expected it anyplace. They are going to fight it with every resource they can put together around the world. On a personal level I look at some of the sports they have in there now and they aren't even sports. Wrestling is a true one on one sport and I hope it continues.
Kayle Dangerud – West Fargo Head Coach: “It's terrible for our sport, it's terrible. We have a lot of kids on the high school, college levels that dream to be Olympic champions.”
The final decision will come in September, but no sport that has been dropped has ever been added back so quickly.
