(WDAY TV) -- A North Dakota soldier is now wearing our nation's highest honor around his neck.

Staff Sargeant Clint Romesha was awarded the Medal of Honor by President Obama in an emotional ceremony at the White House.

Romesha's unit was out-manned 353 at combat outpost Keating in Afghanistan.

8 Americans were killed. 22 injured including Romesha, who kept fighting, even though he was wounded. Romesha took out 10 Taliban fighters, while recovering the bodies of his fellow soldiers.

He says he's conflicted by the medal of honor.

Romesha says, "the joy comes in recognition from doing our jobs as soldiers on distant battle fields. but is countered by the constant reminder of the loss of our battle buddies. my battle buddies. my soldiers. my friends."

Romesha grew up in Califormia, but now lives

in Minot, with his wife and three children.

He currently works in the oil fields.
