Valley City, Barnes County at odds over digital copy of call

VALLEY CITY, N.D. (AP) — Valley City officials are looking into whether Barnes County officials did anything wrong when they obtained a digital copy of a telephone call involving a dispatcher.

The Valley City Times-Record reports that the dispatcher — a city employee — allegedly made unprofessional comments about the county sheriff's office during the call. Sheriff's office officials allegedly obtained a digital copy of the call and gave it to city police, who disciplined the dispatcher with a written reprimand.

Valley City Attorney Russ Myhre wrote in an email to city officials that the retrieval of the digital copy was "essentially a hacking into our computer system and a serious breach of our security systems."

Sheriff Randy McClaflin says his office has passwords and access to the computer system. He denies wrongdoing.
