Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - As temperatures warm up, this is the time that damaging ice starts to form on roofs, potentially causing thousands of dollars in damage.
Ice dams form when heat comes up through the attic, melting the snow and causing it to refreeze at the bottom of the roof.
They can tear down gutters and siding, or cause water to dam up and leak into the home. That can mean anything from water spots to wet insulation within the walls.
Kenneth Hellevang, Ph. D./NDSU Agricultural Engineer: "If it gets wet, stays wet, leads to mold growth, and we end up having to replace some of those areas, it can become very expensive."
