Moorhead, MN (WDAY TV) - Engineers and planners are getting a birds-eye view of the heavy traffic on South 8th Street and Interstate 94 in Moorhead.
This as MN-DOT plans reconstruction of the Highway 75 and I-94 Interchange in three years.
Little cameras, not much bigger than your thumb, have been installed on road signs along 8th street, north and south of the I-94 exit ramps.
In the past, a staff person had to stand outside and count.
Engineers and planners hope to record and document turning patterns and any traffic problems that happen in that area of Highway 75.
It is especially congested in the mornings and evenings as more cars come from and to south Moorhead.
Peggy Harter, MetroCog Transportation Planner: “The cameras out there are collecting and recording turning and so we want to know the number of cars and their travel patterns.”
Engineers are planning on looking at new and different options for the interchanges, but some of them get excluded because of snow plowing limitations.
