Bismarck, ND (WDAY TV) - A bill in the North Dakota House that would have more than doubled taxes on a pack of cigarettes has failed.
The bill proposed to increase the tax on cigarettes from 44 cents to $1 a pack, adding anywhere from $15 to $20 million into the state's general fund. The vote was 72 to 19. Grand Forks Representative Elliot Glassheim says he sponsored the bill hoping to get more North Dakotans to quit smoking.
