Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) -- We hear about windchill all the time, and we know it makes us feel colder.

It doesn't mean the air is colder, but estimates what the conditions feel like on our skin. When you go out with skin exposed, the heat from your body forms a sort of barrier that keeps you warm.

But factor in the wind, and it effectively blows that protection away.

Wind chill also accelerates frostbite.

Roberto Martino, Sanford Occupational Medicine Dr. says, "Skin tissue starts to freeze once you get into the 20s with exposure. But that's just going to happen much quicker if you add on the factors of wind, moisture, contact with cold surfaces."

At six, why wind chill has nothing to do with your car not starting.
