Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - We hear for the first time, from the 84-year-old Fargo man who says he had no idea the pedestrian he offered a ride to on Tuesday night, would an hour later, be arrested and charged with felony theft.

Einar Swanson told us this afternoon, he offered 25-year-old Abdi Abdullahi a ride because he looked cold and homeless.

Swanson says he wants to clear his name after being handcuffed and brought to jail.

At 84, Einar Swanson has never had a brush with the law, but Tuesday afternoon…

Einar Swanson, Gave Ride To Abdullahi: “He looked like he was cold and homeless and like he needed help.”

Everything changed.

Swanson: “I trusted the guy I didn't think he would pull anything that he was robbing the station.”

Swanson says this man, who is now jailed for stealing money from five gas stations, waved down the 84-year-old man, asking for a ride. Abdullahi then asked Swanson to bring him to business after business, where unknown to Swanson, Abdullahi was allegedly stealing money from store clerks.

Swanson: “Twenty or more police cars and guns pointed at me and us, get your hands up and don't move, get your hands up and they got me out and handcuffed me.”

And because of all of this Einar was facing eviction from his apartment building. But late this afternoon, Goldmark changed its mind and will allow Einar to stay.

Abdullahi remains jailed in Clay County on felony theft charges.
