FARGO, N.D. (AP) — A North Dakota man who was arrested on the Spirit Lake Indian Reservation but was able to remove his handcuffs and drove off in the police vehicle has been sentenced to prison.

U.S. Attorney Timothy Purdon announced Tuesday that 21-year-old Weldon Littleghost, of Sheyenne, was sentenced to one year and nine months in prison for damaging government property, possessing a stolen firearm and escape.

Prosecutors say Littleghost and co-defendant Lucas Little, of Tokio, were arrested on tribal charges in April 2011 on the Spirit Lake reservation when they managed to drive off in the vehicle and remove their handcuffs. The two destroyed the car's digital video and radio systems and shot out the back window.

Little was earlier sentenced to one year and 10 months in prison.
