North Dakota lawmakers propose a tax increase on cigarettes

Bismarck, ND (WDAY TV) -- North Dakota lawmakers are considering a bill that could more than double taxes on a pack of cigarettes.

Bismarck, ND (WDAY TV) -- North Dakota lawmakers are considering a bill that could more than double taxes on a pack of cigarettes.

Right now, people buying a pack of smokes pay 44 cents in taxes,but a proposed bill wants to bump that up to a dollar. The potential increase is still dismal in comparison to the four dollars and thirty five cents in taxes people in New York pay.

The tax hike would add anywhere from 15 to 20 million dollars into the state's general fund. But it's main goal is to get people to quit smoking.
