Pelican Rapids, MN (WDAY TV) -- It's been a long-time law to keep your booze indoors and out of sight. But when it comes to winter, and heading out on the ice, there are exceptions.

When it is as cold as it is right now and the ice is froze over, Minnesota law actually allows open containers on the lake.

As soon as you hit the ice, you can crack one open. Having a beer out in public isn't against the law, as long as you're on the ice. But, still you should think ahead.

All state DWI laws are in effect when it comes to driving a car or truck.

No one under the influence are allowed to operate the vehicles if their alcohol concentration is over .08. Some anglers say they are more than ok with the law, but still feel wrong doing it.

Lucas Pike/Angler: " I still would not feel comfortable driving with a beer in my lap or any kind of open bottle in my vehicle because I was raised that you shouldn't."

In Minnesota, DWI laws also pertain to ATV's and snowmobiles whether you are on the lake or not.
