Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) -- We are a weeks away from Spring Prom Season, but today a Fargo South Junior got a jump start on lining up a date. And all of downtown Fargo saw and applauded his efforts.

Up and down Broadway today, heads turned as the Fargo Theatre marquee helped high school junior Alex Kleven, pop the question. In lights, and quite publicly, he asked Carolyn Pifer to prom at Fargo South. With the help of his friend Hannah Westerholm, the two plotted the surprise this afternoon.

Alex Kleven: "I had planned on putting letters on a car and then Hannah suggested this and nothing will top that. So."

We recorded the trio first stopping at Erberts and Gerberts, Carolyn still unaware of what was to come. Seconds later they came out on to Broadway, and Carolyn got asked to prom by way of a Broadway Theatre marquee.

Alex: "I was figuring how to get her out and so I said let's see what is playing outside and that was a great reaction."

Carolyn: "They were acting suspicious my friend Hannah was freaking out all day but I never thought it would be like this or happen."

Alex: "My friend Hannah and I brainstormed all week."

Carolyn: "I said yes, of course, people always talk about being asked to prom in a unique way, and this is awesome, I love it."

She did say yes, and with 3-months to go Alex has time for his stomach to settle, and Carolyn has a cold January day to remember her prom date proposal.

And tonight Alex and Carolyn plan to take friends down to the Fargo Theatre and take night time pictures next to the marquee.
